November is American Diabetes Month. According to the Rochester Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO), 82% of adults in our region had their diabetes under control in 2018 (HbA1c less than 8%). This number increased 8% over the prior year.

The Seneca Park Zoo has been working for decades with several national and state conservation partners to restore and maintain the health of the Genesee River. The Zoo’s impact is particularly evident in their work to bring back the lake sturgeon.
Recently available data (as of August 19) for Monroe County show that 83 census tracts have vaccination rates at least 60%; this is almost 45% of all the tracts in the county.
The demonstrated mental health benefits of sewing and other needlework are many, and this National Sewing Month we feature an organization improving our community’s mental health and creativity, as well as the region’s environmental sustainability.
The inability to meet basic needs among older adults is hidden and rarely acknowledged even though a significant number of older adults in Rochester are living in poverty. One local organization helping older adults cope with financial challenges is Lifespan of Greater Rochester.
