February is Self-Check Month
Rates of colon cancer screenings are quite similar by county in our region (around 65% of adults age 50-70), however, these rates are lower than several counties to the east.
February: Heart Health, Black History
Note the high rates of heart disease in several urban and rural census tracts across New York state. Many of those also have a high proportion of Black population.
January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
The screening rates for cervical cancer vary by county and within city across our region. More than half the census tracts in Buffalo have rates over 84%, while only 1 census tract in Rochester has such a high percentage of screening.

November is Native American Heritage Month; National Rural Health Day is November 19th
The first proponent (in 1915) of a national day to recognize the contributions of native peoples was Dr. Arthur C. Parker, an early director of the Rochester Museum and Science Center (then known as the Rochester Municipal Museum). Dr. Parker was an archeologist of Seneca heritage.
October is Pawsitivly for Pets: How Lollypop Farm Supports our Community
The map shows dog intake volume by county for New York State in the past 36 months. While Monroe County had the highest number of intakes (1,756), Lollypop Farm receives animals from more than 50% of all the counties in New York State.
It’s Hispanic Heritage Month
Many census tracts in the Rochester region have substantial percentages of the population identifying as Hispanic, both in urban and rural areas.
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program: Local Recipients and a Resource
While September may be a time of plenty for some, there are many in our communities who rely on SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) to provide their families with fresh produce, grains and dairy products. SNAP recipients comprise a large percentage of families across our region: almost half the households in some City of Rochester zip codes receive SNAP benefits.
August is Black Business Month
While almost 100,000 Black-owned businesses nationally are in the food industry, only a small percentage of local restaurants are Black-owned. Find and support these local businesses using the maps available in the Map Room, which also shows the numbers of full-service restaurants by zip code.
