In recent years, discussions on climate change have increasingly highlighted its effects on ecosystems, economies, and human health. However, one often overlooked group in this dialogue is the aging population, who face unique challenges from climate-related risks. As Labor Day approaches and summer winds down, it’s important to emphasize sun safety, especially for youth enjoying outdoor activities. Sun Protection Outreach Teaching by Students (SPOTS) is an organization that educates middle and high school students about skin cancer prevention and early detection.
As summer arrives, food insecurity becomes a pressing issue for many children who lose access to the nutritious meals provided by schools during the academic year. To address this, the Summer Meals Partnership of Rochester (SMPR) and the Summer Meals ROC Program offer free meals to children 18 and under at over 35 locations in downtown Rochester, including schools, parks, and libraries.
The weekly influenza and RSV case reports have been updated to now include information on COVID-19 cases in Monroe County, including hospitalization and death rates by age groups.
This week (December 4 – 8) is recognized nationally as Influenza Vaccination Week, reminding us that there is still time to receive the flu vaccine. Local data on both flu and RSV infections are available again this season, thanks to the work of the Emerging Infections Program (EIP) at the Center for Community Health & Prevention and our colleagues at CARES.

This report contains data on flu and RSV cases in Monroe County, including hospitalization and death rates by age group. Updated weekly, on Mondays, this report will be available throughout the flu season.
The most recent data (November 18) for Monroe County includes children (5 to 11 years old), who are now eligible for the vaccine. There are currently 56 (of 179) census tracts with vaccination rates of at least 70%, five (5) of those are in the City of Rochester.
The most recent data (October 28) for Monroe County show that 107 (of 179) census tracts have vaccination rates of at least 60%; 48 tracts have rates of at least 70%.
