August is Black Business Month

August 2020 marks the 17th annual National Black Business Month. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Black-owned businesses account for almost 10 percent of all U.S. businesses. Of the approximately two million companies in the U.S. owned by Black individuals, more than half (59%) are owned by women.
While almost 100,000 Black-owned businesses nationally are in the food industry, only a small percentage of local restaurants are Black-owned. Find and support these local businesses using the maps available in the Map Room, which also shows the numbers of full-service restaurants by zip code.

For more details about these restaurants and their owners, as well as other Black-owned home-based and pop-up restaurants, see this recent article from the Democrat & Chronicle.
