Has anyone here ignored IRS notices before? I’m trying to understand how serious it actually gets.

From what I’ve seen, it seems to escalate like this:

  • First, you get basic IRS letters about unpaid taxes
  • Then penalties and interest start increasing
  • After that, a final notice of intent to levy is sent
  • Then the IRS can start wage garnishment or bank levies
  • Eventually, it turns into long-term collection issues

At some point, people usually end up needing help from a tax resolution specialist in Grand Rapids to deal with the IRS directly.

I’ve also read that irs penalty abatement might reduce penalties in some cases, but I’m not sure how often it actually gets approved.

Has anyone here gone through this? How fast did it escalate for you, and were you able to fix it before garnishment started?
