The American Lung Association is highlighting August 1 as an opportunity to increase awareness and defeat the stigma associated with the disease. Their broader work seeks to defeat lung cancer, create a tobacco-free future, champion clean air for all, and improve the quality of life for those living with lung disease.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number one risk factor for lung cancer, responsible for roughly 85% to 90% of all cases, is tobacco smoking. Recent data from the CDC show adult smoking rates in our region between 10% and 25%, with some areas in the City of Rochester greater than 27%.
