Bike to Work Day is traditionally celebrated the third Friday in May. Established in 1956, theLeague of American Bicyclists reserves the entire month of May as National Bike Month. Bicycling supports good physical and mental health, and promotes a healthier environment. In light of COVID-19, Bike to Work Day has been moved to September 22, 2020. However, this month may still be the ideal time to try to incorporate a creative commute to work, especially if your home just happens to be your office. Perhaps you could schedule a morning and evening circular ride through your neighborhood? Apps such as Strava andMapMyRideoffer an easy way to plan a bicycling route. The University of Rochester Green Dandelion also has a helpful blog with links and recommendations.
Visit the RocHealthData map room to see how your neighborhood compares to others regionally and nationally for percent of workers traveling to work by walking or biking (American Community Survey 2014-2018).
Would you consider biking to “work” this month? If so, please share your ideas and experiences in the comments section below.
